Valentine's day here isn't near the thing that it is the states. I haven't ever been big on the hype so the lack of it was actually pretty refreshing. We planned to go digging for Sand Roses in the desert with a large group from the compound. We all scheduled cars and I don't think the drivers had any idea what they we're in for! We left our compound at 8am, I had packed us some PB&J sandwiches and chips along with bottles of waters. The supplies needed were some shovels, buckets and brushes. No one had a map per say, but around here that's pretty normal. We drove for about an hour on the freeway in a caravan of 12+ limousina vans. Then things got interesting...we exited the highway and then we exited the pave road and drove into the sand into what looked like a garbage dump. After we drove around for about an hour in what did turn out to be the dump I was about ready to give up. We finally got to a clearing that seemed might
to the area we were supposed to be. That was when the SUVs started getting stuck.
We were quite a sight about 14 families and drivers pushing multiple SUVs through the sand in the middle of the desert. After coaching on our driver on how to off road we sped over the small sand dunes to the area where we were going to dig for sand roses. The total trip took us 3 hours. We picked our spot and set up shop we quickly realized that some spots were better than others. Trey dug the hole and I cleaned all the roses we found and sorted them. After a couple hours we had plenty of sand roses, we're all covered in sand and hot. I fell in our large hole a couple times and maddy had her shoes off and was neck deep in a hole digging with a kid shovel. We had so much fun! On the ride back to Jubail we enjoyed our PB&Js and chips. Not the most conventional of valentine's but I did get roses of some sort.
